With all that is going on in the world, it is time to discuss WWII with my 4th and 7th graders at home. My 7th grader takes an additional social studies class and they have started to learn about WWII, so I figured now would be an ideal time to take a deep dive. I have chosen to use Build Your Library's WWII unit study and add in some of the suggested books and others I have found. My youngest struggles with reading, so I will be supplementing the suggested readers for her. One book will be a Magic Tree House book called #1 World at War, 1944. My 7th grader will follow the BYL middle school schedule and we may add in a book here and there as an extra reader or read aloud. My children do well with a workbook style, which is why I printed out the worksheets needed and made a few of my own to add to the BYL activities. I also have some of the items my grandfathers kept from their years during the war. Both were B-29 crew, but in different parts of the world. My husband and son are very interested in planes. We will be definitely be learning more about this plane. It’s always a challenge to keep the extremely sad aspect of history interesting enough that the kids do not wallow in the sadness of it. This is why I choose literature that is both good storytelling and informational. Build Your Library does such a good job at providing an excellent resource to build on to or use as is.
