The first month of school

The first month of a school has been an exciting and challenging time establishing routines, and setting the tone for the rest of the school year. Here are some activities we focused on during this first month of a Band and Beyond Microschool.

We started the school year off with a bang at the science museum! We then had a lovely first day discussing what we would be learning during these first 6 weeks. Everyone was so excited to start reading our first book Heartwood Hotel: A True Home. We have been working hard on grammar, writing, and animal research.

This year we are super excited to be learning zoology and saw an amazing Dog exhibit at the science museum. According to the Orlando Sentinel, “Dogs! A Science Tail” explores what makes canines tick and their relationships with humans on scientific terms. It gets into DNA but also into everyday occurrences such as the zoomies or, as the display calls them, “frenetic random activity periods.” The kids had an amazing time exploring all the doggie displays, especially the one that tells them which dog they run as fast as.

We have also been adding in more subjects each week so that we do not overwhelm the students. Most recently, we discussed the North American Continent and I was pleasantly surprised that most students knew where the different countries were as well as the different oceans. We then discussed the latitude and longitude of the continent and cardinal directions and a compass rose.
